Working through my songs with other musicians is always extraordinary.
I perceive my songs as characters and the transmutation that occurs when other musicians begin to dance with them never ceases to amaze me. It’s as though I witness the character I’ve envisaged suddenly existing in a landscape: Their feet touch Earth and the texture of terrain impacts their posture, plants sprout at their feet and they inhale the scent of a vital world as it emerges around them.
There is gradient, weather and elemental fluidity that is brought to bear by other musicians and the oft surprising interpretation they bring and in reciprocity the character of my song is transformed, sometimes forever. The musicians I’ve worked with become a place the song has travelled to or a story of their life.
In late winter I cast a spell calling for band members to build something beautiful around my songs and a handful of brave souls ventured forth to offer their skills and enthusiasm:
So I’m honoured to introduce Jaz Gayle on vocals, Vince Iddon on guitar, Barry Cohen on double bass and Oli Haines on percussion.
We've been meeting ever since it's been possible, on sunny evenings outside under the summer canopy of the woods, to explore that musical potential as a collective.
I can't express how profoundly thrilling and gratifying it is to discover...we WORK together!
It’s an extremely tentative process inviting musicians to cohabit sonically as a songwriter and I felt almost reckless in my casting out for musicians to share this tender space with me. Some of the collective were people I’d never met nor heard play!
The conjuring met its mark astutely though and somehow there is an immediate sense of collective sensitivity and reciprocity and I’m truly delighted to witness the collective dynamic and musical interbeing gradually emerge.
I can’t wait to introduce them all to my supporters and friends.
We’re venturing out over the next month to play our first live gigs together and we’re all so excited to share our newly emerging collective sound with you all.
You’re going to love them as much as I do.
Disclaimer: The handsome hound is NOT in the band...regardless how much he's angling to be.
