Wee Wild Beasties!
"Come outside. Come outside, my friend. Come outside. Come outside with me. Let's get muddy! Let's go wild in the woods. Kick off your wellies and come dance around the fire with me!"
As a mama and a songwriter, my creative musical opportunities have changed dramatically over the past couple of years since my daughter was born. Late night gigging hasn't always tallied easily with all consuming mother-love!
It's been neither a negative nor a hindrance though. In fact, yielding to the reality of where I'm at here and now has been a wonderfully liberating creative experience.
I've been running weekly singing workshops with families of young children and leading musical forest school sessions
Wild Birds Singing in beautiful woodlands on The Dartington Estate in Devon and this has lead to a whole new realm of wilderness inspired songwriting with children in mind.
I feel really passionate about encouraging children into music, and especially singing; it feels a primal birthright of humanity! Combine that with the importance of getting outside in the mud and fresh air and what you have is the essence of life!
Wee Wild Beasties! Is a homespun album of ten original nature-inspired songs for young children full of action and adventure, creatures and wilderness. Written, played, recorded and edited by myself on a small solar-powered system in my Devon hedgerow home, it's a creative venture that's been grown in the cracks of possibility between the frenzied reality of life with a toddler, like tufts of moss in an old stone wall.
During my daughter's sleep times I have been a hive of creative activity, singing, playing borrowed instruments, children's toys and eclectic household implements.
Inspired by the perception of delight and wonder in the world that is the enchanted perspective of early childhood, the songs are full of positive messages about identity, wildlife and living! They are a joyful celebration of the creatures and landscape they're written from, intended for young children to sing along and dance to, and to inspire respect, enthusiasm and passion for nature and wildness.
At a cost of £6 per CD copy, the album will make an excellent present for young children and families (and anyone with the spirit of a wild child pulsing within them!). It would provide a useful resource for educators and organisations working with children, such as nurseries, primary schools, playgroups and particularly forest schools.
If you like the sound of this project, please spread the word to anyone who might be excited by it and remember to share this project through your social networks.
I'm also running weekly musical forest school sessions, Wild Birds Singing, in Dartington in Devon. I offer workshops and performances at festivals and am available for private parties and events.
