Albatross is a soaring, scenic folk dance with a timeless spirit. It's a song about enduring love, nostalgia, adventure shared and fidelity to the sea. These extraordinary birds can fly for hundreds of miles with barely a wing beat, spend almost their entire lives at sea or on the wing and mate for life, not uncommonly in same sex couplings, expressing their bond through hypnotic courtship dance. Their fidelity, to one another and to the sea, makes them endearingly emblematic of Ellen and Ernest, the couple whose home video footage is immortalised in the archive for which this piece was commissioned; Phoenix Archive Project, made possible by National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Radcliffe Trust. The artwork is a still of an albatross filmed by Ernest Parrish in the 1950s from clip 36 of The Archive. Albatross is dedicated to my Aunty Margaret and Uncle Gordon, whose life and relationship echoes all this, in the resilient tenacity of their bond. Their relationship has always been a beacon to me, of the depth and quality of connection to be learned and earned through truly sharing a life with someone. 2026 |

Rooted in Dartmoor adventures amidst high blown tors, bouldered rivers, rich peatland and lush Atlantic rainforest, this is a joyfully defiant female led folk anthem inspired by Right to Roam: A movement upholding and promoting land access rights in England.
Singer-songwriter Holly Ebony, known for her poetic lyricism and agile vocal style, is Joined by fellow folk artist and banjo player, Anna Anise; cellist, Clarissa Carlyon; drummer, Oli Haines and bassist James Stewart for this sing-along foot stomper, featuring a rousing community chorus of campaigners’ voices. Recorded at Sorting Rooms Studios, with striking artwork by Nick Hayes; Right to Roam campaigner, illustrator and author of Sunday Times Bestseller, 'The Book of Trespass'. All proceeds from the release of the single will be donated in support of the Right to Roam campaign. We know the vital benefits of spending time in nature - how it leads to greater relationship with and care for our wild ecosystems, so urgently in need of our attentive investment. However, only 8% of the UK is legally accessible to the public; Dartmoor the only place in England we can legally wild-camp under awe-inspiring night skies and witness phenomenon like the milky way. Even that right is threatened. The stars shouldn't be a privilege for the few who can access their wonder. The stars are for everyone. 2024 |
